Dobama Theater
If you haven't seen Donald Margulies' The Loman Family Picnic, I highly recommend the excellent production directed by Ron Newell that will be closing on May 16. It is a brilliantly written and relentlessly ugly black comedy about the collapse of the American Dream. Margulies' original talent is clearly evident in his first major play. Dobama's production perfectly captures the nihilistic humor of his dark vision. Tickets are $10 on Friday and Saturday, $8.50 for students and seniors; $8 and $7 for the Sunday matinee. Dobama will be the home of the 15th annual Marilyn Bianchi Kids' Playwriting Festival June 9-13. Performances are at 7:30 pm. There is a 2:30 pm matinee on June 13. Tickets are free except for a $15 benefit for the festival on June 9. For reservations and information call 932-6838.
Karamu Theatre
Margaret Ford-Taylor, executive director of Karamu House, will be directing the final production of the season, Samm-Art Williams' Woman from the Town. It tells the story of Lila Wilson who, accompanied by her daughter, has returned to her rural North Carolina home town after a 27 year absence. She had been run out of the town by her family and friends because of her illegitimate pregnancy. Now a successful New York real estate agent, she has come home to seek her revenge. The confrontation between Lila and her sister Laura, who has struggled to maintain the family farm, makes for an intense dramatic experience. The play will be performed May 14-June 6 in the Jelliffe Theatre at Karamu House, Thursday-Saturday at 8 pm, Sunday at 3
pm. Tickets are $8 on Thursday and Sunday; $9 on Friday and Saturday.
Karamu's Drama-Theatre for Youth Project presents Continental Express in the Karamu Concert Hall on May 15-16 and 22-23. This production offers a whirlwind trip around the world with a brand new collection of folk tales, including costumes, music, masks and movement. It sparks the imagination, opens awareness of other cultures, and introduces children to theater and creativity. All performances are at 3 pm with a $4.50 ticket price. For reservations for either show call 795-7077. Cleveland Public Theater
